Text Editing (Bolding, Highlighting, etc.)

Text Editing (Bolding, Highlighting, etc.)

When selecting a piece of text, there are many things you can do to it other than changing the font, spacing and size.

One of the first things any Word user should know are keyboard shortcuts.  When selecting a piece of text, it is often extremely burdensome to have to click on the buttons.  Instead, try these shortcuts-

To bold something, either highlights it and press CTRL-B, or press CTRL-B before typing it, then press CTRL-B again to unbold the text you are typing next.

To italicize something, either highlights it and press CTRL-I, or press CTRL-B before typing it, then press CTRL-I again to unitalicize the text you are typing next.

To underline something, either highlights it and press CTRL-B, or press CTRL-B before typing it, then press CTRL-B again to not underline the text you are typing next.

To highlight something, either select the text and press the little highlighter option in the Home tab, or press the highlighter option then select pieces of text to be highlighted.  To change colors of highlighting, click on the small drop-down menu next to the highlight button.

To change the color of something, follow the same procedure as highlighting, but click on the text color button (looks like a capital A with a colored line underneath it).

All of the aforementioned effects can be combined on text to create different effects, such as highlighting and underlining a word to draw more attention to it.

To change the font of text dramatically into what Word offers as “special effects”, click the button (A blue A outlined).

A special keyboard combination to note here is CTRL-A, which selects everything.  This is useful for quickly changing everything inside a piece of writing.

Here, I have used most of the effects on the word “cheesecakes”.  There are other effects in the menu up there, and you can find out what a button does by mousing over it without clicking, which after a few seconds will trigger Word to tell you.

In this lesson, we have covered a variety of special effects to apply to Word documents.  These effects can help emphasize particulars inside of the document and serve as useful tools that are simple to apply.

In our next tutorial, we will go over how to insert and modify pictures into Word documents.
