100Base-T
100BASE-T
100Base-T is an Ethernet standard that is an adaptation of the IEEE 802.3u standard. It supports data transmission rates up to 100 Mbps and is one of the most commonly used of all Fast Ethernet standards. 100BASE-T is part of the Fast Ethernet standard because it is 10 times faster than Ethernet.
100Base-T is similar to the 10Base-T in that it has a shared LAN media type when used within a hub. This means that all the connected nodes on the hub share the 100 Mbps. 100Base-T has three types of wiring that is capable of physically carrying signals which are 100BASE-T4, 100BASE-TX and 100BASE-FX.
Similarly to the 10Base-T standard, 100Base-T is governed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and is written in shorthand that denotes its physical characteristics.
In common language, 100Base-T is simply a Fast Ethernet cable that is capable of transferring 100 Mbps and is most commonly used in comparison to any other Fast Ethernet. The variations of the 100Base-T are defined as follows:
- 100BASE-T4:This is made up of four pairs of twisted wire telephone
- 100BASE-TX:This is made up of only two data grade pairs of twisted wire
- 100BASE-FX:This is and optical fiber cable that comes intwo-strand types
