Software Defined Servers
Software Defined Servers
HP coined this term with its ultra-low power servers called Project Moonshot which were developed for specific data center workloads such as big data and cloud computing.
The Moonshot software-defined servers used 89% less power and 80% less space than traditional server systems thus reducing complexity by 97%.
Software-defined servers are able to reach such reductions because they share a variety of components, including cooling and networking as well as power supplies and management software.
The name software-defined servers comes from the use of shared management tools, such as HP’s Integrated Lights-Out software tools, which is able to dynamically assign and efficiently manage workloads across all the servers in the system.
