Conditional Formatting in Excel

Conditional formatting is a highly used and an effective analysis feature of MS Excel. This technique allows a user to highlight cells on the basis of a given criteria or set rule. There are plenty of formatting styles available under Conditional Formatting.

A user can use colors, gradients, even icons for representing the values.

Highlight Cells Rules

In the following tutorial, you will observe the implementation of conditional formatting on Greater than values. Follow the steps below for better understanding.

1. Select the range from A1:A10.

2. On the Home tab, click Conditional Formatting and select Highlight Cells Rules > Greater Than. As shown in the figure below.

3. Enter the value 60.5 and select a formatting style.

4. Click OK.

MS Excel will highlight the cells with the value greater than 60.5.

5. To further evaluate, change the value of cell A1 to 40.

MS Excel changes the format of cell A1 automatically as per the conditional formatting rule defined.

Note: you can also highlight cells that are less than a value, between a low and high value, etc.
