Formatting Cells in MS Excel

Formatting Cells is one of the most power and attractive features of MS Excel. This feature provides the user with the flexibility and control over the data formatting. Formatting Cells cover the type of data, formatting, alignments, borders, shading etc.

Formatting Cells options are quite extensive and so this tutorial will be covering the options that are generally used.

Applying Number format

To apply a number format to a cell or a range of cell, select the desired range.

On the main Home tab, under the Number group, Click on the combo box showing “General” value and select “Number” from the list as shown in the figure below.

Applying Currency format

To apply a currency format to a cell or a range of cell, select the desired range.

On the main Home tab, under the Number group, Click on the combo box showing “General” value and select “Currency” from the list as shown in the figure below.

Applying Percentage format

To apply a Percentage format to a cell or a range of cell, select the desired range.

On the main Home tab, under the Number group, Click on the combo box showing “General” value and select “Percentage” from the list as shown in the figure below.

Changing Foreground and Background of a Cell

To change the foreground or background of any cell or a range of cells, first, select the desired range.

For changing the foreground, on main “Home” tab, under the “Font” group, click “Font Color” and select desired color from the pallete as shown in the figure below.

For changing the background, on main “Home” tab, under the “Font” group, click “Fill Color” and select the desired color from the pallete as shown as shown in the figure below

Managing Borders

Applying Borders

For applying a border, on main “Home” tab, under the “Font” group, click “Border” and select the desired border style from the pallete as shown as shown in the figure below

Remove a Border

For remove border, on main “Home” tab, under the “Font” group, click “Border” and select the “No Border” style from the pallete as shown as shown in the figure below which will remove all the borders.
